I started in commercial access control back in 2014, wiring card readers and maglocks for office parks around Phoenix before I realized residential gate owners were getting the short end of the documentation stick. Commercial jobs came with wiring diagrams, sequence-of-operation write-ups, and sign-off sheets. Homeowners got a handshake and a receipt. That didn’t sit right. I built Vance Gate Repair around the opposite approach: every visit gets the same photo log and written record I’d been trained to produce on industrial sites. When I’m not troubleshooting a FAAC 740 operator or reviewing an apprentice’s limit-switch adjustment, I’m usually the voice on the other end of the phone at odd hours. I still answer most calls myself - old habit from when it was just me and a truck. My dry side? I’ll tell you straight up that a gate that hasn’t been serviced in eight years isn’t broken. It’s just been patient, and patience runs out.

Marcus T., Lead Technician

Marcus has been with us four years and carries the factory certifications on LiftMaster and Linear operators that most shops in Scottsdale don’t bother pursuing. He specializes in the electrical diagnostics that separate a dead motor from a $12 capacitor failure - a distinction that saves homeowners a full replacement bill more often than you’d think. Before joining us, Marcus spent six years maintaining automated gates for a master-planned community in North Scottsdale, so he’s seen what desert heat and monsoon dust do to photo-eyes and control boards over time. Off the clock, he rebuilds vintage motorcycles in a garage that’s somehow more organized than our parts room. Elena joined Vance Gate Repair in 2019 after running her own welding and fabrication side business out of a shop near Papago Park. She handles our custom gate installations and the structural repairs that other companies sub out - bent track, cracked welds on wrought-iron frames, posts that have shifted in caliche soil. Her welding certification is current, and she’s the reason we don’t need to call in outside fabricators when a Scottsdale homeowner wants a matching section built rather than replaced. She keeps a rock collection from every jobsite in her truck’s center console, which she insists is “practical reference material” and not a hobby.

Darnell K., Service Coordinator

Darnell is the person who makes sure your technician arrives with the right parts, the right documentation, and a heads-up text with their name and photo before they pull into your driveway. He’s been with us since 2021 and came from a dispatch background in HVAC, so he understands that “sometime Tuesday” isn’t a real appointment window. Darnell maintains our parts inventory across the nine brands we service, which means he knows whether that Viking G-5 gearbox is in stock or if we need to overnight it from El Paso before your technician even calls you back. He lives in South Scottsdale and will occasionally recognize a gate address from his old running route. His detail orientation extends to catching when a technician’s photo log is missing a torque-spec close-up before the homeowner ever sees it.

Jesse M., Apprentice Technician

Jesse started with us in early 2024 after completing a mechatronics program at a local trade school and deciding that factory assembly wasn’t hands-on enough. He’s currently working through our internal certification ladder on Ghost Controls and Mighty Mule systems, which see heavy use in the residential communities around McDowell Mountain Ranch and DC Ranch. Marcus has him doing every photo-eye alignment twice - once by eye, once with a level - until the muscle memory sticks. Jesse asks more questions than any apprentice we’ve had, which is exactly the point. His first solo repair was a BFT submersible pump control on a property near the canal, and he still has the photo of the wiring diagram he drew by hand taped inside his toolbox lid.
