BFT welding and fabrication needs typically surface with the Phobos BT and Phobos AC swing-gate operators, the Ares and Deimos sliding-gate lines, and the older IGEA residential arms still common in Scottsdale’s 1990s-2000s builds. The bracket that mounts the operator to the gate frame is where we see the most custom welding demand, BFT uses a specific 10 mm slotted bracket on Phobos units that doesn’t translate directly to LiftMaster or FAAC hole patterns.

To identify what you need, check the silver BFT data plate on the motor housing for the series name and production date code. For the gate itself, measure the wall thickness of the square tubing at the hinge post, older Scottsdale iron gates often run 2″ × 2″ × 3/16″ wall, while newer aluminum frames drop to 1/8″ or thinner. That measurement determines whether we can weld a repair plate or whether the frame section needs full replacement. Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags 2-4 inches on the latch side when closed. This usually means the hinge post has cracked at its weld to the underground sleeve, or the sleeve itself has rotted in our alkaline desert soil. The BFT operator keeps trying to close against the misalignment and eventually faults out.
• You hear metal grinding or popping during the open/close cycle. The operator arm bracket is shifting on a cracked or poorly rewelded gate frame. BFT’s torque output is high for its size, so a weak frame weld will fail before the motor does.
• The operator arm detaches completely from the gate. The mounting bracket has torn through the frame tubing, often on thin-wall aluminum gates or iron gates that have rusted from the inside out after years of sprinkler overspray.
• The gate opens fine but won’t latch without a shove. The frame has twisted at a weld joint, usually where a horizontal rail meets the vertical stile. In Scottsdale, this often follows a summer of thermal expansion cycling against a binding roller or hinge.
• Visible rust bubbling at welds, especially at the bottom of vertical posts. Desert irrigation and monsoon runoff pool at these joints. Once rust penetrates a weld, the BFT operator’s repeated stress cycling finishes the job in a matter of weeks.

There’s a short list of what a Scottsdale owner can safely check: verify the BFT operator is faulting due to mechanical resistance rather than an electrical issue, look for visible cracks at welds or bracket bolts, and confirm the gate isn’t simply obstructed by debris or a shifted paver. What you should not attempt: cutting or grinding on a loaded gate frame, welding on a gate still connected to an energized operator, or supporting a 300+ pound iron gate with anything less than proper jack stands and blocking.
